Etihad Rail announces new high-speed train; travel from Dubai to Abu Dhabi in 30 mins

On Thursday, Etihad Rail introduced its first high-speed, all-electric passenger train, which will link Abu Dhabi and Dubai, enabling commuters to travel between the two cities in just 30 minutes.

The train, capable of reaching speeds of 350 km/h, will serve six stations, including Reem Island, Saadiyat, Yas Island, and Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi, as well as areas near Al Maktoum International Airport and Al Jaddaf in Dubai. In addition to this advanced transportation option, Etihad Rail plans to launch a standard passenger train service.

The high-speed train and its infrastructure will be developed after the tendering process is completed. Currently, there is no timeline for when it will be operational, according to Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail.

This ambitious project is anticipated to contribute Dh145 billion to the UAE’s gross domestic product (GDP) over the next 50 years.

In comparison, the regular passenger train will eventually traverse the UAE, heading towards the border with Oman. It will pass through areas like Mezeira’a and the Liwa Desert, known for its iconic oasis. Stations will also be established in Sharjah and Fujairah, with plans to connect to the wider GCC once the GCC Railway becomes operational.

The regular-speed passenger train will link all the emirates, traveling at a speed of 200 km/h and accommodating up to 400 passengers. Sharing the same rail network as the cargo trains, it will include four main stations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah.

Although the train and its facilities are fully equipped and prepared, a spokesperson mentioned that the start date for operations has yet to be disclosed.
